Wolfgang Hilberg (1932-2015) was a German electrical engineer and professor of Digital Circuits and Storage at TU Darmstadt (1972-2000). In 1967, while working at Telefunken AG, he invented the digital time-coding scheme for the DCF77 long-wave signal, enabling radio-controlled clocks (Funkuhren). Commercial production began only in 1986, after his patent expired. His later research focused on neural networks for language and cognition. Hilberg held 45 patents and received the Eduard-Rhein-Technologiepreis in 2011.
