Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) uses machine-learning models to produce new content, including text, images, video, audio, and code, in response to user prompts. Key milestones: GANs (2014), Transformer architecture (Vaswani et al., 2017), which enabled Large Language Models like GPT and BERT (2018). The mainstream boom accelerated with ChatGPT’s release in November 2022. By 2025, models like GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek had expanded to complex reasoning, code generation, and autonomous agent capabilities.
