Learning to See: Value Stream Mapping to Add Value and Eliminate Muda (Lean Enterprise Institute, 1999)
Written by Mike Rother and John Shook, this workbook introduced value stream mapping as a practical method for visualizing the flow of materials and information through a production system. It teaches practitioners to draw current-state and future-state maps that reveal waste, delays, and improvement opportunities. The method originates from the Toyota Production System, building on the conceptual groundwork laid by James Womack and Daniel Jones in Lean Thinking (1996), which formalized “value stream” as one of five lean principles. Value stream mapping has since been adapted beyond manufacturing to knowledge work, service delivery, and organizational design.
