Forward Deployed Engineer
Dev versus Delta: Demystifying Engineering Roles at Palantir | Sorry, that isn’t an FDE
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside the customer’s organization, builds on the vendor’s own platform, and feeds the resulting requirements back into it. Palantir created the role and called it “Delta” internally. Bruno Pontes Soares Rocha (2019) framed the split: a Dev’s focus is “one capability, many customers,” a Delta’s is “one customer, many capabilities.” Ted Mabrey (2024) traces the idea to the French restaurant, where the waitstaff is part of the kitchen and tells you which wine goes with the fish.
